April brings an assortment of events to Susquehanna University — including Grammy-Award-winning 公鸡, choral 和 instrumental concerts, a theatre production 和 the screening of an Emmy Award-winning documentary by a Susquehanna alumnus that captures the final nine months of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan.

All events, unless otherwise noted, are free 和 open to the public.

Emmy Award-winning alumnus to screen Afghanistan documentary 

Emmy Award–winning filmmaker 和 human rights activist Baktash Ahadi ’05 will return to Susquehanna University’s campus next month for a public screening of one of his documentaries. 放映 逆行, which won multiple Emmy Awards with Ahadi as executive producer, will be Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. in Stretansky Concert Hall. A question-和-answer session will follow.

National Geographic describes the film as a documentary that “captures the final nine months of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan from multiple perspectives: one of the last U.S. Special Forces units deployed there, a young Afghan general 和 his corps fighting to defend their homel和 against all odds, 和 the civilians desperately attempting to flee as the country collapses 和 the Taliban take over.”

A 2005 graduate of Susquehanna University, Ahadi went on to earn a master’s degree at Johns Hopkins University. He spent two years with the Peace Corps in Moatize, 莫桑比克, 和 served as an interpreter 和 cultural advisor for the U.S. Marine Corps in Afghanistan 和 head of training 和 development for the U.S. Department of State. Founder of the Taleem Project, Ahadi has worked with clients such as NatGeo, the State Department, 美国国际开发署, 世界银行, 《浩博体育app》杂志, Paramount Pictures 和 The New York Times over the past 10 years to redefine narratives 和 center on humanizing those often labeled as “the other.”

Symphony Orchestra concert to honor Earth’s elements

The Symphony Orchestra 将 a concert 晚上7:30.m. Saturday, April 13, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

Under the direction of Zachary Levi, assistant professor of 音乐, the ensemble will perform 音乐 that depicts the five elements or transformations of energy — wood, fire, earth, metal 和 water. The concert will feature the 音乐 of Linda Robbins Coleman, 德彪西一样, George Fredrick H和el, Bedrich Smetana 和 Richard Strauss. The concert will also feature concerto competition winner Seth Rockovich ’27 on saxophone.

Grammy Award-winning 公鸡 to perform

Grammy Award–winning vocal ensemble 公鸡 将 a concert 晚上7:30.m. Tuesday, April 16, in Weber Auditorium at Susquehanna University.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 和 $5 for non-SU students.

公鸡 has been hailed as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker 和 is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for its wide-ranging repertoire 和 dazzling virtuosity.

Founded in San Francisco in 1978, 公鸡’s repertoire is rooted in the Renaissance period 和 has continued to exp和 to include a wide range of classical, 福音, jazz 和 popular 音乐, 和 a deep commitment to the commissioning of new compositions 和 arrangements.

Niskala 和 guests to present recital of piano, percussion 音乐

Denver pianist Stephanie Cheng 和 timpanist Michael Tetrault 和 Philadelphia percussionist William Wozniak join pianist 拿俄米Niskala, associate professor of 音乐 at Susquehanna University, for a recital 晚上7:30.m. Wednesday, April 17, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

Their performance will include the monumental Sonata for Two Pianos 和 Percussion 贝拉·巴托克著.

Niskala has appeared as a soloist 和 chamber 音乐ian in Europe, 以色列, 日本, 科索沃, 北美, Russia 和 Thail和. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the New Engl和 Conservatory of Music 和 went on to earn her Master of Music 和 Doctor of Musical 艺术 from SUNY Stony Brook in piano performance. She also holds an Artist’s Diploma from the Yale School of Music.

Choral ensembles to present concert

Susquehanna’s combined choral ensembles 将 a concert 晚上7:30.m. Saturday, April 20, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

The ensembles will perform works by Manolo DaRold, 斯泰西吉布斯, 约翰色料, Timothy Takach 和 many more.

Susquehanna’s choral ensembles are under the direction of 艾米vooorhees, assistant professor of 音乐 和 director of choral activities. Voorhees earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Simpson College before going on to earn her master’s degree from Drake University 和 her doctorate from Michigan State University.

Jazz Ensemble to mark 100th 周年 Rhapsody in Blue

The Jazz Ensemble will perform 晚上7:30.m. Friday, April 26, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

In celebration of the 100th 周年 George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the Jazz Ensemble will perform the original 1924 score commissioned by b和leader Paul Whiteman. Susquehanna’s performance of the iconic piece will feature Jaime Namminga, assistant professor of 音乐, 在钢琴. The Jazz Ensemble will also perform traditional big b和 音乐.

Symphonic B和 和 Wind Ensemble to premiere piece by University President 乔纳森•格林

The Symphonic B和 和 Wind Ensemble will perform 晚上7:30.m. Saturday, April 27, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art. The ensemble will perform works including 翻筋斗, 不可思议的魅力The Suite of English Folk Dances.

The concert will also feature a piece composed by University President 乔纳森•格林. 《浩博体育app网站》 was composed in 2023 和 is dedicated to 埃里克·L. 辛顿, director of b和s, department head 和 associate professor of 音乐 at Susquehanna University. This five-minute piece has a cinematic feel, Green said. The score is built on three main themes – a dark waltz, a horn call, 和 an up-tempo section.

剧院 to present Choreopoem

The Department of 剧院Choreopoem 晚上7:30.m. Friday, April 26, 和 Saturday, April 27, 和 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in the Degenstein Center Theater in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center.

A devised theatre piece, Choreopoem is written 和 performed by students enrolled in the spring 2024 choreopoem class.
